How to: Find an iPhone

Didn’t pre-order the iPhone 4, but now want one. Here are a few handy ways to feed the iPhone 4 crave.

The Apple Store Online is a safe alternative, but it will take about 3 weeks according to the Apple Store Online. From my conversations with the Apple Retail Stores, they are saying that the reserving in store would be a shorter wait. Note, you do not need to walk in the Apple Retail Store to reserve, you can call; however, reserving means picking the device up in store within 24 hours of receiving the email.

Best buy stores are also an alternative to purchase the iPhone 4. But, from speaking with customers and employees, they do not have a time frame in which you would receive your device. Additionally, from talking to Radio Shack, they do not have the iPhone 4 in stock but can order one for you. But, even Radio Shack claims they do not know when the iPhone would arrive.

All in all, the choice on how you would like to reserve your device is up to you. Personally, I would choose an Apple Retail Store as they tend to have a higher priority on receiving the devices. If possible I would call multiple Apple Retail Stores in the area and reserve the iPhone 4 – it would help increase you chances on receiving the iPhone 4 sooner.

A New Edition, Welcome iPhone 4

As we prepare to welcome the new birth into the iPhone family-though some lucky pre-orders may have received their devices early like our Review Editor Zander, we ask ourselves, “What will I do with my old iPhone?” Well, there are may alternatives: sell your iPhone or keep the iPhone as a fancy remote or book reader.

Where and How to Sell Your Old iPhone:

Where to sell, there are several online retailers where you can sell your device. To state the obvious, eBay and Craigslists on the list. However, there are sites such as NextWorth witch will pay a certain amount of money given the condition of the phone. Additionally, NextWorth allows selling of your charger or dock connector, but will only pay a lousy $1 for an accessory that retails at $29 at the Apple Store. There is also another option, called SellYourMac, which contains a fairly similar process as NextWorth.

Before selling your device, I would suggest removing your data. There are a few different methods of wiping the data from your iPhone. The first and most common, restoring your iPhone in iTunes. Make sure you create a backup of your iPhone, so you can move the settings onto your new iPhone. After the restore, the iPhone will ask you to “Choose from Backup” or “Setup as New iPhone” at that point, you can eject the iPhone, your data has been removed. The second method, is on the iPhone. On the iPhone, go to Settings, General, Reset, then tap “Erase All Contents and Settings.” This will drain most of your battery, so plug your iPhone into the charger and let it run.

Pimp my iPhone:

Of course, there are always different alternatives to selling your iPhone. Why not put the old iPhone to use, with the multitude of apps in Apple’s App Store, turn your iPhone into a remote. If you have AirTunes-see our guide here, use your iPhone as a remote to control the music by the help of Apple’s Remote app (free). If you happen to be a Comcast customer, use their Comcast app (free) to view the upcoming shows and schedule your DVR. Also, download an application such as Mocha VNC (free or U.S. $5.99) to control your iMac from the kitchen. Air Mouse Pro (U.S. $1.99) proves to be a good option if you want to turn your iPhone into a trackpad to control your Mac. Air Mouse Pro even brings in functionalities of a “real” mouse by allowing the two finger swipe.

With iOS 4, Apple brings iBooks (free). Turn your old iPhone into a dedicated book reader. Additionally, I would think about other applications to add such as Marvel (free), Zinio (free), or even GQ (U.S. $4.99).

These are just a few options, but which ever route you choose to take, someone will enjoy the iPhone!

The iPhone 4 Antenna Fiasco

Apple is now saying that their antenna issue on the iPhone 4 is only a software issue and will be fixed with a software update. Apple announced that the problem was not with the antenna placement, but by the formula used to calculate how many bars your iPhone really has. They said the miscalculation could show you have two extra bars. They are going to be switching over to AT&T’s formula to calculate the bars in the next update, which should be rolling out in the next few weeks. I’m guessing you can expect the update in two weeks, but this is only a guess.

iOS 4: What’s Great For The Rest of Us?

My brother, the tech incapable one, asked me a good question today. What is the difference between our iPhone 3G’s-not 3G S on 3.1.3 and iOS 4. Of course, just after watching the keynote, I say there is a bunch of stuff. But as I said that, I thought about it. What is new for 3G users? Then, I started compiling a list. And when I got pretty much to the end of the list, all I could find were a mere few new items to the 3G. Folders, that’s a plus, but no multitasking-unless bypassed modifying the N82AP plist. We have video calling, wait no only iPhone 4 to iPhone 4. We got those neat-o unified mailboxes, which will help make me more productive. Lastly, any upgraded graphics Apple put into the newest OS, but that is pretty much it. In the long run, there are not many new features for the 3G, due to “hardware restraints.” Hopefully, Apple could work on putting these other features, such as multitasking, into 3G’s by changing some of the code to make them work. Although, this would not be a smart business plan for Apple by supporting devices for longer than 2 years. This is my hope, but as the Rolling Stones say, “You can’t always get what you want.”
