i can haz iPhone?

Is it possible to own an Android phone and still be a Mac? The answer: yes. I own a MyTouch 3G from T-Mobile. I happen to like T-Mobile and the MyTouch isn’t all too bad. I’ve been with T-Mobile for a couple of years, I’m still under contract with them, and they have pretty decent phone and data plans. The only thing I don’t like about them? They always seem to be the last to pick up the newest phones. Case in point, a couple of years ago I wanted the Motorola RAZR. Guess who didn’t carry them? But I waited, and that eventually paid off because I was able to get it the next year.

It would only be a matter of months, though, before I discovered that RAZRs don’t like washer machines. Dryer machines too, for that matter.

Changing phone numbers is a hassle. I also knew from the get-go to stay clear away from AT&T. Previous experience taught me that they had the customer service of a seasick bureaucrat. Apple will end its exclusivity,” I thought. “Just wait.”

So now I went with the MyTouch 3G. No App Store, no FaceTime, no Find iPhone. But when it comes to smart phones, it’s not so bad. I can hit the Net, I can text, I can play Words With Friends, it has a camera. The basics, but enough to get by. Of course, the one feature my Android has over the iPhone is Swype. It’s awesome.

Would I love to have an iPhone? Uhh, yeah. But I want it with T-Mobile. The fact that Verizon carries the iPhone sets a great precedent. It’s starting to look like Apple will want the iPhone 5 to not care which type of network it’s on. The time will come for T-Mobile to carry the iPhone. It may be the iPhone 5 or 6, but it will happen. Just wait.

And as long as I don’t wash my new iPhone, I’ll be set.

Why Jailbreak your iOS device?

What is Jailbreaking? Jailbreaking is a form of “hacking” your iOS device, but why should you do it? When you use your iOS device, you are limited to what you can do with it, but when you jailbreak it, it seems like you can do anything with it. You can do simple things such as having 5 icons on your dock, instead of the usually maximum of 4, which could come in handy if there are 5 different apps you like to use on your iOS device. Jailbreaking lets you tweak your iOS device so you can have it your way. You can do a variety of things such as getting an AndroidLock. Android devices have a unique lock that has 9 dots that you have to connect in a certain way to unlock your device. The dots act as sort of a password for Android devices, so jailbreaking your iOS device to give it this AndroidLock is a great feature. You can also have folders that scroll down, change the number of icons per page, and have a dock that scrolls. Even when you want to take advantage of the MultiTask feature on iOS devices, when you jailbreak it, you can have a page preview of your apps instead of just an icon of the app when you jailbreak it. You can also change the effects when change pages and in one case, you can click a button to make your apps float around your screen as if there was gravity. You can also download apps from installous and even get apps that aren’t in the App Store. You are free to do so many different things with your iOS device when you jailbreak it. The downside is that you have to jailbreak it again every time you update your iOS firmware.

Feel free to leave a comment.

iPhone and iPad Expand in Enterprise Market

What’s better then beating the Android phones? Apple certainly has dominated the Smartphone industry and crushed their opponent’s. Apple’s name itself can beat any other company, but the iPhone’s haven’t had the best reviews written about them in a while. Many critics give harsh  reviews about the iPhone, but when it comes down to it, it doesn’t matter about the critics. The critics don’t sell the phone itself and there are millions of more customers then a couple of reviewers. Apple knows how to market the iPhone better then the Android people do, that’s the bottom line. You think I’m lying? Take a look at these charts:

Apple has certainly dominated the industry with the variety f the iPhone’s and iPad’s. One of the main reasons that Apple continues to dominate is that it continues to make many different forms of the iPhone and iPad. The iPad 2 just came out; it took less then a year for a new iPad to come out. That is a remarkable feat by Apple. Another good reason is that AT&T dropped the iPhone 3GS to just $49. That is pretty cheap for an iPhone that still has many capabilities. The iPhone will continue to grow rapidly and honestly, I’m not sure there is a competitor that can beat the iPhone out right. I see Apple having a long time success with the iPhone’s. What do you think? Drop a comment below and let us know.

iFad?

There seems to be some questioning about whether or not tablets (not just the iPad1) are here to stay. Katherine Noyes compains that they don’t offer enough functionality, and pans the iPad directly2. Even Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak didn’t seem too impressed with the future of tablets by remarking that they were only for “normal people” (whatever that means).

And certainly with the waxing and waning of the netbook still fresh in our minds, it’s easy to see that the latest gadgets aren’t necessarily the greatest3.

However, I think the reason for the netbook’s demise (other than the iPad) was that it didn’t represent a paradigm shift. Sure, it was kind of cool to see them out in public for the first time (“That’s your computer? How is it so small?”), but in the end it didn’t have anything new to offer. I think the poor economy was the main reason for its popularity.

Now tablets do come to the table with something new. Instead of install disks there are app stores, they are all solid state, and no mouse is required. Paradigm shift.

So what does this all mean for the future? Moore’s Law states that technology gets faster and smaller4. I think in the end, it will shrink to the point of not even being physical anymore. Movies, such as Iron Man 2, Minority Report, and Final Fantasy: Spirits Within5 depict computing as manipulating holograms, which is the way I too imagine computers going. But in the interim, that means that people will demand smaller technology. And that means tablets.

With Motorolla Xoom sales not even topping 100,000 units sold and different tablet projects getting killed before they even hit the streets, that means it’s the iPad for now. You can also read a previous article, comparing the iPad to the Galaxy Tab.

1Please don’t read into this article that I’m trying to say iPads are the coolest ever, and they’ll always dominate. In fact, I hope the purported “iPad killer” does come along. Competition between developers leads to choices for the customer. It’s not like Apple has exactly gotten lazy about developing the iPad, but just imagine what could happen if push came to shove.

2Of course, in the same breath, she says smartphones have more functionality than the iPad.

3I would love to see a VH1 “Behind the Music” for the netbook

4Try comparing ENIAC to the iPad 2.

5Yeah, I went there. Sorry.

You want an iPhone nano!

Apple is bringing back the idea of an iPhone nano. The iPhone nano is about 1/3 smaller then the iPhone 4. Sources have said that Apple wants to launch more inexpensive phones to counteract with the Android phones. The iPhone nano would retail for $200 without the contract price. The iPhone nano is just a smaller version of the iPhone, but it still comes with all the features. The same components that are in the iPhone 4 would be put into the iPhone nano. I think that the iPhone nano would be a huge hit. With its small design, I believe that it will attract many people. The price tag will definitely draw some attention to it because it will be a good option to a new iPhone. I’m not exactly sure how a smaller screen will exactly work. The iPhone 4’s screen is a descent size, perfect for games and for texting. In comes a smaller screen which may cause for a lot of squinting. The texting could be a problem because the key board will be smaller. Many people already have a problem texting with the iPhone 4, with a smaller keyboard, more people would complain. Apple is known for scrapping many products, who’s to say that they won’t scrap this one either? I believe that Apple will have to go through many tests in order to put this product out on the market. I believe that it will work, but only Apple has the right to make it happen. Do you think it will work? Drop a comment below and let us know.
